Dune grass takes on a golden color in the fall, contrasting with
a deep blue ocean.
A FALL CHILL IS IN THE AIR, and that means
it's time to winterize your outside water systems if you haven't already
done so. While we may have a few more warm days ahead of us, night
time temperatures have been dropping, so it's time to call your plumber,
landscaper, or contractor.
GIVE SEALS SPACE:
Seals are occasionally encountered on our local beaches. In most
instances they are simply resting after swimming or avoiding predators.
The Marine Mammal Stranding Center in Brigantine urges anyone coming
across a seal to stay at least 150 feet away from it, allowing it the
rest it needs before it returns to the water. If you think a seal
is injured or sick, please report it to the MMSC at 609-266-0538.
DID YOU KNOW there have been many whale sightings off
South Jersey beaches in the past few weeks? Whales are generally
in the area until December, and can often be seen in the ocean or
Delaware Bay as they pursue food sources. In addition to whales,
dolphins can also be spotted in local waters, along with birds and other
wildlife. Cape May Whale Watcher runs trips through December
17th—dress warm, and enjoy the natural beauty of these magnificent
creatures! Read More.
THE OFF SEASON IS A GREAT TIME to
complete projects at your shore property. From painting and carpet
cleaning to renovations and repairs, begin your projects now and beat
the spring rush. Need a contractor recommendation? Call or
email me!
IT'S ALSO A GREAT TIME to purchase
your own shore property! Here's why: there is a broader selection
of properties available now than in previous months; you can enjoy your
new shore property over the winter while readying it for the summer
season; if renting your new property for the summer, rental income is
paid out all year long, as deposits are received, helping you cover
expenses. And best of all? Family memories at the shore begin
immediately!

News:10/12/2023
Blue skies and puffy white clouds over the bay, late in the afternoon on
a beautiful October day!
TWO GREAT VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES are coming up next
weekend, each offering a great way to help our beaches!
Avalon's annual Dune Grass Planting event takes place
on Saturday, October 21st. Volunteers can help plant sprigs of
dune grass, which grow roots to help stabilize the dune system,
protecting the island during storms. See the events list below for
registration information.
Beach Sweeps also
take place next weekend in Avalon and Stone Harbor, on Saturday, October
21st. Volunteers are needed to help collect plastic and other
trash from our local beaches. The twice-annual beach sweeps are
held along the New Jersey coast, and last year volunteers removed
hundreds of thousands of items from beaches. Registration
information is below.
IT FEELS "OCTOBER-ISH!"
After a stretch of warm weather, our recent run of sunny-but-cool,
breezy days combined with chilly temperatures overnight have made
October feel like, well, October! Put on that sweatshirt or
sweater before you take a walk on the beach!
CARMEN'S
SEAFOOD "BELLY BUSTER": Carmen's, the waterfront seafood
restaurant in Sea Isle City, will hold its annual "Belly Buster" dinner
this Saturday, October 14th, beginning at 5pm. If you love
Carmen's, or simply love seafood, you'll love the Belly Buster!
It's a family-style sampling of a huge variety of delicious dishes.
As Carmen says, "from appetizers to desserts, it's good for your wallet,
but can your stomach handle it?" The Belly Buster is $45.95 for
adults and $15.95 for kids (4 & under are free!)
GHOST
TRACKS APPEAR...THEN DISAPPEAR. Recent winds and currents
uncovered the famous "ghost tracks" on Sunset Beach along the Delaware
Bay in Cape May. The tracks are from a railroad operation that
hasn't been active in a century, and are usually covered by sand.
Occasionally winds and currents shift enough sand for the tracks to
become visible. But if you didn't catch a view of them recently,
you're too late—at last check winds and currents had conspired to cover
the tracks once again.
TIME TO WINTERIZE!
Plan ahead and call your plumber, landscaper, or contractor to schedule
the winterizing of your outdoor water systems. Outside showers,
exterior hose bibs, and irrigation systems should all be winterized.
GO PHILLIES! There has been plenty of
cheering for our local team, as we all enjoy "Red October!"

Current News:10/5/2023 |
After a long stretch of rain, warm sunshine returned this week. There
are still plenty of beach days left!
HELLO, OCTOBER! And hello to blinking yellow lights, right
turns on red, and easier parking everywhere! Smaller crowds and
nice weather are another October bonus!
THE THREE-DAY WEEKEND
coming up brings some great events with it! Avalon's Seafood
Festival (Saturday at Surfside Park, 10am to 5pm) features live music,
crafts & vendors, and, of course, fresh local seafood. Stone
Harbor's Classic Car show (Saturday on 96th Street, 10am to 1pm) will
bring a variety of vehicles to 96th Street, followed by a parade at
1:30pm. The "Breezing Into Fall" Fashion Show and Luncheon takes
place Sunday, 12pm to 3pm, at the Yacht Club of Stone Harbor.
PLAN AHEAD for Fall Beach Sweeps in Avalon and Stone Harbor on Saturday,
October 21st. The beach sweeps are organized by Clean Ocean
Action, who report that during their 2022 Beach Sweeps volunteers
removed more than 376,000 items from New Jersey beaches. Keeping
our beaches clean enefits not only beachgoers but also marine life, by
keeping plastic and trash out of our waterways. For details, and
to register, visit http://cleanoceanaction.org/beach-sweeps/sites-and-registration
DRIVING OUR MARKET: Higher interest rates affect real estate
markets by dampening demand. But according to a Wall Street
Journal article from September 8th, "higher interest rates have prompted
homeowners to stay put rather than buy new homes...resulting in an
unusually low inventory of homes for sale." The article goes on to
say "prices are generally holding firm." If you are considering a
shore purchase, why wait? Begin enjoying your shore property now!
